Power over Ethernet Injectors

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology is growing more and more popular everyday.  PoE is energy efficient, less costly to install and eliminates the need for electrical outlets.  Numerous devices can run on PoE technology, including: network clocks, digital displays, IP phones, network cameras and more.

But what do you do when you have several products that run on PoE technology and not enough Ethernet plugs?  Most importantly, you do not need to modify your existing Ethernet switch equipment or cabling to support PoE.  All you need to do is add a Power over Ethernet injector in a switch room or endpoint to inject power into the twisted pair LAN cables.  PoE is fully compatible with both powered and non-powered 10/100BaseT Ethernet devices, featuring a “discovery process” specifically designed to prevent damage to existing Ethernet equipment.

Following are several pieces of “must know” information about PoE injectors:

  • PoE injectors comply with IEEE 802.3af
  • Enclosure material, weight, length, height and width are basic specs to consider
  • PoE injectors allow Ethernet to carry DC power along with data packets
  • AF standard converts to 15.4 watts of power
  • AT standard converts to 60 watts of power (enough to run a computer)

Microsemi is Inova Solutions’ preferred vendor for PoE injectors.  You can purchase Microsemi’s PowerDsine 3001 PoE Midspan Converter through the buyinova.com website.
